Peruvian products conquer the Netherlands

In 2020, the main destination of Peruvian agricultural products in Europe was in the Netherlands. This country has imported US$26,376 million in agricultural products from the world, 14% more compared to the value of 2019. Of the total, US$1,306 million were provided by Peru, a country that increased its shipments by 24% compared to the previous year . Thanks to this result, Peru positioned itself as the sixth most important supplier, with a 5% share (one percentage point more than in 2019). It is worth mentioning that Belgium, with a 13% share, and Germany, with 12%, were the main suppliers of the Netherlands.

The result was the product of a change in the way of marketing. The coronavirus pandemic caused several European countries to impose restrictions and close their borders, diverting the entry of their imports through the Netherlands, the main link between the old continent and global suppliers. Thus, countries like Peru were forced to increase their shipments indirectly through the Netherlands to supply the rest of the European countries.

TOP 3 PRODUCTS SHIPPED

The main Peruvian products imported by the Netherlands during 2020 were avocado, with a 29% share; the blueberry, with 23%, and the mango, with 12%.

Avocado was the third most imported product by that market. During 2020, imports of this fruit totaled 424,672 tons for US$ 1,223 million, 22% more in volume and 19% more in value compared to the previous year. To this market, Peru sent 137,257 tons for US$ 382 million, 44% more in volume and 45% more in value compared to 2019. Thus, Peru became the main supplier of the fruit, with a 31% share (5 percentage points more than in the previous year), followed by Colombia, with 17% participation (8 percentage points more than in 2019).

The price of avocado in the Netherlands was US$2.88 per kilogram on average, 2% less than the previous year. In the European market, the price of this Peruvian fruit was US$2.79 per kilogram, similar to that of 2019, and that of the Colombian product was US$3.09 per kilogram, similar to the previous year. Regarding the main Dutch buyers of Peruvian avocado, Nature’s Pride B.V. stood out, with a 17% share, and Westfalia Marketing B.V., with 8%. As for the main Peruvian supplier companies, Westfalia Fruit Perú S.A.C. stood out, with 8% participation, and Agrícola Cerro Prieto S.A., with 7%.

In the case of blueberries, the Netherlands imported 101,231 tons of the fruit for US$692 million, 30% more in volume and 35% more in value compared to 2019. In this market, imports of Peruvian blueberries totaled 42,185 tons per US$ 301 million, 71% more in volume and 79% more in value compared to the previous year. Thanks to the good reception of the berry, Peru positioned itself as the main supplier, with a 42% share (10 percentage points more than in 2019), followed by Chile, with 23% (similar share to the previous year).

In the Netherlands, blueberries were priced at US$6.84 per kilogram on average, 4% more than in 2019. The fruit with the highest price was Peruvian, with an average value of US$7.14 per kilogram, 5% more with Over the previous year. On the other hand, blueberries from Chile were quoted at US$5.84 per kilogram, similar to 2019. In this market, Peru positioned itself as the second supplier of this fruit in volume, with a 33% share (2 percentage points more than in 2019), after Brazil, with 37% (2 percentage points less). It is worth mentioning that Peru became the main supplier of mango in value, with a 34% share, displacing Brazil, with 32%.

In the European country, the mango was priced at US$1.64 per kilogram on average, 1% more than in 2019. The fruit with the highest price was the Peruvian, with an average value of US$1.68 per kilogram, 4% more with Over the previous year. On the other hand, Brazilian mangoes were priced at US$1.41 per kilogram, 5% less compared to 2019. Cocoa beans were the main agricultural product imported by the Netherlands. During 2020, cocoa imports totaled 988,517 tons for US$ 2,621 million, 9% less in volume and 5% more in value compared to 2019. Of the total, 17,675 tons for US$ 51 million were supplied by Peru, 11% more in volume and 20% more in value compared to 2019. Peru rose one position and positioned itself as the seventh supplier of the grain, with 2% participation (1 percentage point more than the previous year). The main supplier of cocoa was the Ivory Coast, with a 45% share (share similar to that of 2019).

The average price of cocoa in the Netherlands was US$2.65 per kilogram, 15% more than the previous year. Peruvian cocoa was priced at US$2.90 per kilogram, 8% more compared to 2019, while cocoa from the Ivory Coast was priced at US$2.66 per kilogram, 15% more. The main buyers of Peruvian cocoa in the Netherlands were Katoen Natie B.V., with an 18% share, and Tradin Organic Cocoa B.V., with 11%. Thanks to the good reception of the root, Peru rose one position and positioned itself as the second supplier of ginger, with a 15% share (5 percentage points more than in 2019), after China, with 66% (3 percentage points). percent less).

The root with the highest price was Peruvian, with an average value of US$1.91 per kilogram, similar to the previous year. In this market, Peruvian asparagus imports totaled 8,327 tons per US$ 46 million, 4% less in volume and 3% more in value compared to the previous year. This good reception made Peru position itself as the main supplier, with 63% participation (5 percentage points more than in 2019), followed by Germany, with 11% (5 percentage points more).

In the Netherlands, asparagus was priced at US$5.65 per kilogram on average, 7% more than in 2019. The Peruvian vegetable was priced at US$5.55 per kilogram, 7% more than the previous year. On the other hand, asparagus from Germany was quoted at US$5.88 per kilogram, 2% more compared to 2019.
